Vision for Our Village

The Council’s significant improvements to the street scape of Erskineville Road, the restoration of the Town Hall and The City of Sydney’s City of Villages strategies have given a new lease of life to the Erskineville shopping strip bringing a stronger sense of community.

How will the Woolworths development impact the City of Sydney’s vision for Erskineville Village?

Excerpts from 2007 Local Action Plan, City of Sydney, Inner West for Erskineville Village.

" The people of Erskineville love the village atmosphere, valued by locals as a “small country town minutes from the city and coast”. Erskineville Road with its friendly “community vibe “ is a place with no pretension. The village feel ” is reinforced by the school, the station, the square, the community centre, local shops, leafy trees and relaxed café hubs. Residents say Erskineville is a tight community with strong sense of local identity. "

“A small country town feel to it, yet only minutes to the city or the coast. Everyone looks out for each other and we try to keep the streets clean and tidy

City of Sydney, City of Villages Vision. Corporate Plan 2008-11

“Sydney is a tolerant, diverse and prosperous “city of villages” that provides a high quality of life and amenity for residents, businesses and visitors. Sydney’s people feel a strong sense of belonging and are empowered to participate in the opportunities the City offers. We value our rich natural, cultural and urban heritage. By building upon this strong foundation and through our commitment to sustainability, equity and civic collaboration, Sydney is a flourishing and outward-looking city of which its communities are justly proud.”

A change in the commercial balance will have a serious financial impact on some if not all retailers
